Ἀποφθέγματα βασιλέων καὶ στρατηγῶν

Plutarch · Notas, a partir da 1

[1]: πρόσφορον ... τι] ὅρον ... τινὰ in nearly all mss. Apparently the first part of πρόσφορον was omitted early, and τι was changed to correspond.

[2]: ᾗ omitted in most mss. which add δὲ after Σειράμνης.

[3]: ἐρῶσι] ἐρῶσι καὶ καλλίστους ὑπολαμβάνουσι in many mss.

[4]: ἦσθʼ] ἦς Stobaeus, Flor. x. 53.

[5]: ἀποτίλλειν F.C.B.: ἀποτίλλεσθαι. Some mss. give a slightly abbreviated version, but the sense is quite clear, and is confirmed by Moral. 565 a.

[6]: διδοὺς] διαδοὺς in most mss.

[7]: Hartman would omit οὐκ.

[8]: διὰ κατηγορίαν F.C.B. from Diodorus, xv. 10: δι’ ὀργὴν

[9]: τιθέναι] Cobet would omit.

[10]: Ἰδάνθυρσος as in the mss. of Herodotus: ἰδάθυρσος.

[11]: ὀγδοήκοντα] ὁ ὀγδοήκοντα van Herwerden.

[12]: κατὰ F.C.B., cf. for example 337 d: καὶ.

[13]: κωμῳδιοποιόν (the preferred form) Bernardakis: κωμῳδοποιόν.

[17]: ἐνέπεσε] ἐπέστη some mss.

[18]: μέγαν added by F.C.B.

[23]: ἐν ὁδῷ] ἐν ἀγρῷ (?), cf. ἐπὶ χώρας Moralia, 123 f and 707 b.

[24]: αὐτὸν] δι’ αὑτὸν Pantazides.

[25]: ἔχουσιν] Hatzidakis would add ὁμονοίας from Moralia, 70 c, and Life of Alexander, chap. ix., but it is not absolutely necessary.

[26]: κατακλῖναι] κατακλινῆναι van Herwerden.

[27]: ἐκατὸν omitted in nearly all mss. but is in the Life of Alexander, chap. xxv.

[28]: δὲ διδόντος Bernardakis: διδόντος or δὲ δόντος.

[29]: γῆν Hatzidakis and Kronenberg: τὴν.

[30]: ἀγόμενος] ἀπαγόμενος Maximus et Antonius, Sententiae, p. 569.

[31]: ῥήματος] πράγματος (?); Heracles was not noted for his words! γράμματος E. Capps.

[32]: οὐ παίζοντας] συμπαίζοντας Bernardakis. The question is, of course, whether they played professionally or would not play at all; (σπ)ου(δῃ), a not uncommon attendant of παίζω, would make the first alternative unequivocal, and οὐ συμπαίζοντας (E. Capps) would do the same for the second.

[33]: ἀκούσῃς Moralia, 506 d: ἀκούσῃ.

[34]: τιμώμενον] γενόμενον Cobet.

[35]: μαστιγοῦσθαι] μεμαστιγῶσθαι Pantazides and S. A. Naber, but μαστιγοῦσθαι can be defended as an imperfect infinitive.

[36]: λιποβοτανεῖν Bernardakis: λειποβοτανεῖν.

[37]: σιωπήσειν, Life of Demetrius, chap. iv. is probably right: σιωπῆσαι.

[38]: παραλαβὼν F.C.B.: ὁ δὲ παραλαβὼν. Some slight change is required to make the sentence grammatical. Bernardakis accomplishes the same result by omitting Ἐπεὶ δʼ and ὁ Δημήτριος.

[39]: ἂν added by Bernardakis.

[40]: κωμῳδιοποιὸν, the preferred form, Bernardakis: κωμῳδοποιὸν.

[41]: ἐαυτῷ (cf. 211 a) Hatzidakis: ἐαυτὸν or ἑαυτοῦ.

[42]: ὀξυτέραν] ὀξυτάτην Blass.

[43]: Καφισίας, the reading of the mss. of other authors who mention him. Also the name of a sculptor is so spelled in an inscription: καφίσιος.

[44]: Πολυσπέρχων Xylander, from the Life of Pyrrhus, chap. viii. as well as other writers: πολυπέρχων or πολυσπέρχης.

[45]: Ὀλυμπίασιν Bernardakis: ἐν ὀλυμπιάσιν.

[46]: ἀεί] Wyttenbach would omit, but the embellishment does not seem out of place.

[47]: ἀλλὰ] δ’ ἅμα, Life of Themistocles, chap. xviii., is preferred here by some editors.

[48]: κολούουσιν] λοιδοροῦσι in some mss. and editions; but the passages cited in note d support κολούουσιν.

[49]: Ἀθηνῶν Cobet: ἀθηναίων.

[50]: ἔντευξιν] ἔνδειξεν some mss.

[51]: ἄριστος] δίκαιος, Life of Aristeides, chap. iii.

[52]: ἐξ] ἀφʼ in some mss.

[53]: ἐωνημένον] ἐωνημένος Hartman, possible but not imperative.

[54]: οὐκ Cobet: μὴ οὐκ.

[55]: εὔηθες Aelian, Var. Hist. xiii. 38: εὐήθη.

[56]: τραυματίας] ναυμαχίας οὔσης or ἐν ναυμαχιᾳ is suggested by Bernardakis, but ναυμαχῶν, from Ulpian on Demosthen. Contra Midiam, would be simpler. Some mss. have τραυματίαν and one τρασμένος (i.e. τετραυματισμένος = τραυματίας).

[57]: ἱππεὺς ἢ ὁπλίτης Stobaeus, Florilegium, liv. 52: ἱππεὺς. Cf. Moralia, 440 b.

[58]: ἢ πελταστής Bernardakis: ἢ πελταστὴς ἢ πεζός or ἢ πεζὸς ἢ πελταστής; but it is not imperative that such readings be always consistent!

[59]: δεξαμένοις, Hartman, is clearly right from the Life of Phocion, chap. xiv. (747 f οὐδὲ αἱ πόλεις ἐδέχοντο ...): δεξαμένων.

[60]: εἰς τρίτην Wyttenbach from the Life of Phocion, chap. xxii.: εἰσέτι.

[61]: αὑτῷ F.C.B. from the Life of Phocion, chap. xxiii.; αὐτῷ Wyttenbach: οὕτω.

[62]: Μικίωνα] the Life of Phocion, chap. xxv.: Νικίωνα.

[63]: ἔγωγε E. Kurtz: ἐγώ σοι, suggested long ago, is preferred by Hatzidakis: ἐγώ σε. Perhaps αὐτῷ, Aelian, Var. Hist. xii. 49 (i.e. αὐτῷ γε) is right.

[64]: αἰσχύνεσθαι] αἰσχυνεῖσθαι Hartman and S. A. Naber; but the Life of Lycurgus, chap. xiii. suggests that the present is right.

[65]: ναὶ Cobet: νὴ.

[66]: ἄν τυ, αἰ Cobet: τεῦ εἰ.

[67]: οὐ δὴ γυναικών F.C.B. from Moralia, 212 e, 215 d, 230 c (γυναικών also S. A. Naber): οὐ δεῖ, or οὐδ’ εἰ, γυναικῶν.

[68]: ἐξελκύσας Moralia 219 c: ἑλκύσας.

[69]: τὶν Cobet: τύνη.

[70]: οἱ (not in the mss.) is found in the other quotations of the passage.

[71]: ταύτης] ταύτῃ Pantazides.

[72]: δαὶ (cf.Moralia 213 c) Hatzidakis: δὲ.

[73]: Ἱδριέως Xylander (from Moralia, 209 e, and Life of Agesilaus, chap. xiii.): ἰκριέως or ἰκαριέως.

[74]: παρατάξας] παρέταξε Hartman.

[75]: ἴσοις E. Kurtz (from Moralia, 215 a): ἴσοι.

[76]: ἀγωνισάμενος ἐνίκησεν Hatzidakis and F.C.B. (from Moralia, 215 a): ἀγωνισάμενοι ἐνίκησαν.

[77]: πλαστὰν the reading elsewhere (cf. note b): πλαθὰν.

[78]: ἔστιν] ἔσται Hatzidakis from Moralia, 215 a, perhaps rightly.

[79]: Παιδάρητος in Moralia, 231 b, and Life of Lycurgus, chap. xxv. The mss. of Thucydides viii. give Πεδάριτος: παιδάρετος.

[80]: αὕτη F.C.B. from Moralia, 149 a, where the mss. have a similar error: αὐτός, probably due to ἔντιμος: οὗτος Pantazides, ὁ τόπος Bernardakis would add.

[81]: Εὐδαμίδας Xylander from Moralia, 220 d: εὐδαιμονίδας.

[82]: Ἀκαδημείᾳ the better spelling: ἀκαδημίᾳ.

[83]: περισεσάλπιγκται Stobaeus, Florilegium, liv. 65.

[84]: τὸ τοῦ Bernardakis, comparing the other versions in Plutarch: τὸ τῶν γειναμένων αὐτὸν τοῦ.

[85]: παραινῶν] παριὼν S. A. Naber.

[86]: There can be little doubt that Epameinondas said Ἑκάταιον, although the mss. have a later form Ἑκατήσιον.

[87]: στένει] ὑστερεῖ S. A. Naber.

[88]: Τέλλην Hatzidakis: Τέλλης.

[89]: Ἰολαΐδαν Aelian, Varia Historia, xii. 3: ἰολλίδαν (or ὑολλίδαν).

[90]: Ἐπαμεινώνδου F.C.B. Cf. No. 6 infra: ἐπαμινώνδα, but there is no uniformity in the mss. Bernardakis would read the dative, Ἐπαμεινώνδᾳ, which is probably wrong.

[91]: Νικοδήμῳ, Life of Pelopidas, chap. iii.: νικομήδει. S. A. Naber would read Νικόδημον, but the reading in the Life and in Aelian is against it.

[92]: πεπειρᾶσθαι] πεπείραται some mss.

[93]: ρωμαιων αποφθεγματα. μανιου κουριου, etc.] these headings are usually omitted in the mss.

[94]: Λαιβῖνον as in the Life of Pyrrhus, chaps. xiv.-xix., and in many other authors: λαβιήνῳ.

[95]: ἀπὸ] ἐπὶ Life of Fabius Maximus, chap. xii.

[96]: ἵππου προῄει] ἵππον προσῄει Life of Fabius Maximus, chap. xxiv.; but obviam in equo vehens venit (Aulus Gellius, ii. 2) rather favours the reading found in the Moralia.

[97]: ταῖς ὁμολογίαις] τῆς ὁμολογίας Petavius, perhaps rightly, although μεταμέλομαι is occasionally found with the dative.

[98]: αὑτὸν Hatzidakis: αὐτὸν.

[99]: ταμιείου the better spelling: ταμείου.

[100]: Πετιλλίου the usual spelling: παιτιλίου.

[106]: αὑτῶν as in the Life of M. Cato, chap. x.: αὐτῶν.

[107]: ἀπῃτημένους] ἀπαιτουμένους, ibid.

[108]: ἔλαβεν Wyttenbach: λαβεῖν.

[109]: Ἀλβίνου Xylander, from the Life of Cato, chap. xii.: λαβιήνου.

[110]: ἀπὸ στρατείας] ἐπὶ ὑπατείαν Wyttenbach.

[111]: ῥώμῃ, συνεῖδε F.C.B.: ἔγνω Hultsch and van Herwerden: ἔμαθε Hultsch: παρέβαλεν εἰς Pantazides: ἔχον Kronenberg: μεταξὺ S. A. Naber: μὴ σὺ.

[112]: ἐπαγγελλομένου F.C.B.: ἐπαγγελλόμενος.

[113]: γε Wyttenbach: δὲ.

[114]: αὐτὸς] αὑτὸς van Herwerden.

[115]: αὐτὸν ... τρίτον] τρίτον αὐτόν Hartman, presumably on the basis of Justin xxxviii. 8. 8; but it is also true that this was the third important commission given to Scipio from the Senate.

[116]: ὕβριν from Moralia 777 a: πόλεων or πολέων.

[117]: ἀτρέμα] ἠρέμα?

[118]: τούτων Wyttenbach: τοῦ.

[119]: ἀργυρῶν as in Moralia, 175 e, and elsewhere: ἀργυρέων.

[120]: πόλτον: πολτὸν or ποτὸν.

[121]: τριάκοντα] δὶς τριάκοντα or ἑξήκοντα Cobet.

[122]: τί] ὅ τι Bernardakis, ὅτι Hatzidakis.

[123]: ἀποβάλῃ] ἀπολάχῃ (!) Hartman.

[124]: τοῦτο Wyttenbach (as in Moralia, 506 d): τοῦτον.

[125]: τῷ χάρακι] τοῦ ... χάρακος in the Life of C. Marius, chap. xviii., is preferable, but not imperative.

[126]: ἔχουσι] ἔχωσι some mss., but the indicative stands in the Life of C. Marius, chap. xviii.

[127]: Καμερίνων in the Life of C. Marius, chap. xxviii. Latin has e, Greek usually α.

[128]: Πομπαιδίου Wyttenbach (as in the Life of Cato Minor, chap. ii., and elsewhere): πομπίου.

[129]: νωνῶν: νόννων.

[130]: Καιπίωνος Xylander: σκιπίωνος.

[135]: χρῆσθαι] χρήσεσθαι in the Life of Pompey, chap. xxxiii.

[136]: ἢ] ἢ νέῳ Pantazides and S. A. Naber, but this is quite discredited by the other three versions. (Cf. note d.)

[137]: ἀνάγκη ... ἀνάγκη Iunius (as in the Life of Pompey, chap. l.): ἀναγκάζῃ ... ἀναγκάζῃ.

[138]: ἀνάγκη ... ἀνάγκη Iunius (as in the Life of Pompey, chap. l.): ἀναγκάζῃ ... ἀναγκάζῃ.

[139]: πεινητικοῦ is preferred by Bernardakis, but both forms seem to have been in use.

[140]: τοὺς αὑτοῦ F.C.B. (cf. the Life of Cicero, chap. lx.): τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ.

[141]: πᾶσι F.C.B. (=πρὸς τοὺς παρόντας in the Life of Pompey, chap. lx.): πᾶς of the mss. could be kept and explained, but it is not found elsewhere in Plutarch with this expression, and Cobet would omit it here also; but it may have been substituted for πᾶσι under the influence of πᾶς ἀνέρριμαι κύβος, Aristoph. Frag. 673 Kock: E. Capps suggests πάξ.

[142]: ἐκ supplied: not in mss.

[143]: ταμιείου the preferable form: ταμείου.

[144]: ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας ἂς] ἂς ἐκ τῆς οἰκίας ? Bernardakis: ἐκ τῆς οὐσίας (cf. the Life of Cicero, chap. xliii.) Hartman.

[145]: Ῥοιμητάλκης the preferred spelling: ῥυμετάλκης.

[147]: αἰτίαις] αἰτίᾳ van Herwerden.

[148]: διαχειμάσαι F.C.B.: διαχειμάσειν. Or perhaps ἂν should be omitted, simply to accord with what little we know of the historical facts.
